WHAT WE THINK:

Topps took a good thing and made it better this year with Mayo Football. They took input from their release of 2008 Mayo and created a classic with this set. With the guaranteed one auto and one relic per box, you arent necessarily going to buy the box for the hits as this set is really geared for the set builder. They went from their black and white design from a year ago to the bronze colored cards which are very reminiscent of Allen and Ginter products.

As you can see the front design is a painted picture of the player and their last name and team name at the bottom. This can prove a little difficult if you are not familiar with all of the players and must flip to the backside to see who it is. The Rookies are donated by the "rookie" in the bottom right instead of the team name. The set also offers a bunch of the retired stars and hall of famers like Aikman, Montana and Marino. You will also find a healthy dose of inventors, politicians and other historical figures peppered in the base set which are a lot of fun to read the backs of. The base set is your thin card stock but the silver base parallels are the thicker base which would need a 75pt top loader. These are particularly frustrating and often are off-centered.

What could a Throwback set be without the minis? They are again included one per pack and offer all kinds of variations. For instance, there are Mayo Blue Backs this year as well as HARVARD red backs which are numbered to 25. We received one in our box and are the parallel to the hand numbered bazooka backs in the Allen and Ginter products. You can also find Cloth minis, printing plates and Mayo Gold fronts.

The hits are very very sweet looking with using the framed mini approach. The jersey relics have the thumbprint size hole so you can actually feel the jersey piece where as the autos are completely encased. The auto design is much better this year however, the autos are sticker autos which is a change from the Allen and Ginters. The A&G have on card autos which make them so much more appealing. That would be probably the only thing that could be improved on. Even for sticker autos, the layout is fantastic and will be something highly sought after by football collectors.

Dont forget the top loader! It is a very cool design and yes some of them are autographed as well. Just more bang for your buck. Although, it is hard to find a way to store the oversized toploaders.

All in all Topps made a very quality product with 2009 Mayo Football. It is PERFECT for set builders with the task of 55 short printed cards as well, plus the hits are very classy design and a nice compliment for any player collector or relic seeker. There are big chase cards in it, but you are mainly going to purchase these if you like the design and want to collect something fun.

I'm not a big football collector, but this stuff looked very nice. The color seemed to pop a bit more than Ginter. How's the card stock, Ryan? Thick or thin? Always enjoy the reviews. Keep up the good work!!

Like how the cards look, excelent cards to get signed and like how the Auto's look this year. Opened a couple packs of it already, and nice looking in person.

This set looks great. The cards are really great looking and it has a color scheme that I have never really seen before in a product. I have always loved A&G and this would be the same type of great thing for football fans. The "encased" relic cards are always a hit for me cause I enjoy that even though they are on a "mini" card, the GU piece is still a good size. Once again, for me, HUGE plus with ON-CARD Au's. Great product, great bust, great review. Thanks again Topps and SCH!!!

These are a LOT of fun. I think the set would be fun to put together... I am just not a big fan of the thick cards.

cheers,
Ryan

Looks like an awesome set, love the looks of the inserts, jerseys, and autos. Looks like a promising product of good autographs and rising stars. Hopefully better then Ginter.

My local dealer has been trying (with some success) to interest me in these. He's been touting these to me as the A & G of football. As primarily a football card collector now, but yet a devotee of A & G baseball, I don't see how I can say "no" to them. Nor do I want to. They have so many of the positive attributes of the A & G including just enough non-sports cards to liven up the set. Like others, about the only downside I see so far are the sticker autos and the thick silver parallel inserts.

But still, all in all, I'm sold on these I think.

Thanks to Topps for making these available to SCH and to Ryan for the review.

Thanks for the card SCH and really appreciate all that you are doing. I g the card in today and it looks amazing. This is why this website is one of my favorite ones, you talk about sports cards, reply to threads, comment on the reviews and have a chance to win a card.

Thanks Again,
- Alan
