WHAT WE THINK:
2010 Topps has been released and has hit the ground running. Fresh off their "exclusive" MLB license, Topps is now in competition with themselves so the first question naturally is - what's going to keep them striving to make products better?
To start, in 2010 Topps Baseball there are literally hours and hours of enjoyment from one box. There are tons of inserts, unique chase cards, a great design for the base set and a One Million Card giveaway where every card is a winner!
The base set is your typical Topps issue. They have a very nice front design and the back is your standard statistically filled info box that you have come to expect. Yes, this year as well, the #7 of the set is the Mickey Mantle card. Every rookie is emblazoned with the official MLB rookie logo and with Topps holding the exclusive contract, this is the only place you will find them in 2010. The downside to the regular Topps issue is that the cardstock is extremely thin and subject to easy damage.
Parallels are also available in this year's release including the ever popular gold, black, platinum and silk parallels! If you want to give yourself a set-building challenge, we suggest you give the gold set a try. It will force you to trade with friends or buy online without breaking the bank.
Three inserts per pack is a bit much, but if you like the inserts, you'll love it. It just gave the pack too busy of a feel with so many of them...the "When They Were Young"c set is a real nice addition and we found the "Cards Your Mother Threw Away" to be particularly fascinating. More intriguing were the backs, where Topps had a story to tell about each of these rare cards. The one we scanned is the 2006 Topps Alex Gordon which was never supposed to get out because he didn't meet the requirements for a rookie card. The inserts are not numbered, but they are plentiful and fun additions to a personal collection for any player fan and collector.
It is not listed on the box, but the relics/autos fall one per box on average. We got to the end before hitting anything and the hits were MORE than a surprise. With regular Topps, you almost assume you will receive hits from a "B" list star and every once in a blue moon an "A" lister. Not so with our box as we pulled a nice Tony Gwynn jersey card (non-numbered) and a MASSIVE hit with the 1/1 jersey name-plate patch from the All-Star game of two-time Cy Young award winner....Tim Lincecum! Not bad at all. We can not comment on the autographs as we didn't receive any but look for some sweet cut autographs in this release. One shouldn't jump into these expecting a massive hit, but they are there to be pulled.
Topps has found a way to make the hobby fun year after year. Your collection just isn't complete without trying some Topps 2010... perhaps you will hit it big too!
