I'm trying to come up with the best way to keep/catalogue my collection. Anyone have any ideas? Where/how do you all keep your sets? Hoe about those cards you deem more valuable than the others?

Being a set collector, mine are all in set boxes in number order except for my Red Sox extras that arent part of sets. Those are all in a 1600 count box waiting to be sorted and cataloged.

Being a setbuilder also I keep them all in three ring binders 3" and nine pocket pages, the full sets go in smaller binders only for that set.

Thanks for the info. I need to sit down one day (week? year?) and catalogue all my stuff. That should be fun.......

I have used Microsoft Spreadsheet to catologue all of them and it takes forever. I have been working on mine for almost 2 years almost every day. Good luck.

And you have how many kids? How do you find the time? :) I have often thought of doing the same thing. I may start soon. I think it will be a task well worth doing and will get me in touch with my collection again.

I have 3 kids, ages 7,5 and 2 you wanna see pics lol. I just work on it a little here and there, 52,000 cards catalogued that is also why I have not added a bunch to my wantlist since last April. I love having them in order though as I know exactly what I have and what I need to finish the sets I am working on. I plan on adding a set a month until I get back to 20,000 cards on the wantlist part of it.

I have enough trouble working on 5 or 6 sets at once. There is NO WAY I could have a 20,000 card want list and hope to keep it straight. -lol-

I don't know how you guys do it. What are the pros and cons of using those 9-card clear pages and binders for your sets?

There is 104 sets on my site right now. I have been able to keep most of it straight now that I am down to needing very few out of all of those. I have knocked off 10 sets so far this year and I hope to knock of 10 more this year, thus another reason I am not adding much to the list. When I had 20,000 on there last year I did not really have to look for trades but now I am on RST and a few others looking for trades everyday. I will quit rambling now.

Bruins, I have no cons except for the cost and the pros are I can add a card to a set within minutes with the system I use to catalogue everything. I like being able to see everything in my collection if I want to.

That's how I'm thinking - I can see my set anytime I want to. Thanks again for the input.

What do you mean you are on other sites? ;) Seriously, it is all about how much effort you want to spend. I have found over the years that trading online has helped keep me in tune with the hobby during times I didnt used to and now I want to find a way to know exactly what I have. Still working on what would be the best idea.

Everything I add to my site I let RST know to give you guys the first shot. :) But I have noticed that since my page has shrank tremendously trades are becoming very hard to make as most people are only looking for specific cards and I do not have the time to look through 15,000 base cards that I have for trade to see if I have any of those players. My inserts go very fast and that is why I use them to finish sets off and I have become a little more picky with them.

If any of you are still pondering how to catalog your collection I have a basic access database of over 750k cards (set, card number. player name and basic book value) that I'm starting to use. I've added a couple bells and whistles like a single click to add entire sets to wants (very helpful with set building) and reports that dump have/want lists as formatted web pages. I'm working on a "trade tracker" now to help with the influx of cards I have been getting since I joined this site. I would be happy to share it with anyone if they would like.

Lots of good information here. I list all my inserts, G/U, Certified Autos, Kirby Puckett and Rookies on My Collection on Beckett. All the sets I have completed are noted as complete on the end of the box with the number of cards in the set and manually logged. All my sets in progress are stored in individual boxes. I am trying to log all my cards for trade right now but what a job. I bought a medium size collection late last year and am still working on that. All my autos through the mail are logged as to date sent and logged in when received back. All in person autos are also logged both by player and by date and place and team they were with when signed. Lastly, anything over a certain dollar amount is put in my safety deposit box and logged.

Chris,
It's still a little rough around the edges but I'll be glad to send you a copy to get your opinion. It's a bit large (130MB) so I'll put it on a CD and send it to you in the next day or two. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
